Glossary
The words that turn up in hosting emails, DNS settings and SEO reports, each explained in a few paragraphs with what it means for your business.
- DNS
- The Domain Name System: the public directory that turns a domain name into the addresses of the services behind it, such as your website and your email.
- Nameserver
- The server that holds the authoritative DNS records for a domain. Whoever runs your nameservers controls where your website and email point.
- A record
- A DNS record that points a name, usually your bare domain, at the IP address of the server that hosts your website.
- CNAME record
- A DNS record that makes one name an alias of another, commonly used to point www at a hosting provider without hard-coding an IP address.
- MX record
- A DNS record that tells the rest of the internet which servers accept email for your domain. Change it and your email goes somewhere else.
- TTL (time to live)
- The number of seconds other servers may cache a DNS record before checking it again. It decides how quickly a DNS change is seen everywhere.
